Mark Froelich

Programme Director

Mark holds a First Degree in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Utah State University as well as an MBA in International Business from UC Berkeley. He has 20 years’ experience in Data Centre and high-tech office campus projects, with major multinational corporations in the USA, APAC and EU. He has managed all Data Centre delivery phases including ownership of real estate development/site evaluation and selection, conceptual design through to detailed design, construction, testing/commissioning (Cx), operations acceptance and handover to operations teams for over 34 data centres including both new construction (including greenfield sites of up to 60MW IT load) and retrofits. He is a licensed professional engineer with full business fluency reading, speaking and writing Mandarin Chinese.

Before joining Chayora, he was a Senior Director for Universal Creative in delivering their brand-new high-tech theme park in Beijing, as well as holding senior positions with Google and Amazon Web Services in Japan, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Ireland and Australia. Responsibilities included Programme/Project/Construction Management, Design Management, Planning, Vendor Performance Management, Infrastructure Business Development and Real Estate Development. He is experienced in multicultural APAC, US and EU recruiting, hiring, team building, multi-disciplinary integration and collaboration. Mark was a team member of an “Amazon.com Inventor” group utilizing the team’s engineering background and data centre design and operations experience to design and manufacture a simple, inexpensive  and quick seismic scissor clamp (US patent applied for) to hold down server racks and cabinets.

Prior to this he led the design team for the 900,000 SF Lucasfilm Letterman Digital Arts Center high-tech office campus in San Francisco, home to LucasArts and Industrial Light & Magic. Challenges of the project included an exceptionally high power load due to the computer density – nearly three per desk – and need for inter-connected data centres for one of the entertainment industry’s largest computer networks. The complex utilized passively controlled mixed modes of natural ventilation and air-conditioning, while featuring daylight-rich spaces. As a result, the building consumed an estimated 60% less energy than a standard office building of comparable size, which earned the campus LEED Gold certification from USGBC.
